that these godless people are actually to be found within the visible church—‘having a form of godliness but denying its power’ (2 Tim. 3:5). And there have indeed been times in the history of the church when godlessness and a worldly spirit, with its preoccupation with forms and rituals, have been all too apparent. It was so when Jesus whipped the stall-holders and moneychangers out of the temple and exclaimed, ‘Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!’ (John 2:16).
